Saltwater Song
Read Play Love's 2022 Spring Musical
At Read Play Love, we provide a nurturing, compassionate atmosphere that focuses on the creative expression of each individual child. Here's what's coming up next:
The unique thing about Read Play Love is...the love! We create a role for every child participating, and from an empowering audition to a triumphant closing night, our primary goal is simple: to build confidence and nurture creative expression of each child. RPL is the ideal place for kids to try theatre for the first time, as well as more experienced performers to stretch their wings & grow! Saltwater Song is an inspiring twist to the fairy tale of the Little Mermaid! Part of Read Play Love's series of new musicals for a new generation, Saltwater Song originally premiered in 2015, and now it's back for 2022!
|
As always, we write our musicals specifically for the kids in the show- so we'll be updating the show for the new 2022 cast. At RPL, not only does every child get a part, but they get a role actually written especially for them!
Kids age 4-16 are invited to join our world of mermaid sisters, fantastical sea creatures, mischievous mermen, goofy sharks, helpful pirates, and humans who dare to dream in spite of all obstacles.

Auditions
Auditions:
We create a role for every child who auditions. Auditions can take place in person or by video. We invite children to sing a song of their choosing, and to relax and have fun. At Read Play Love, even our auditions are designed to be positive, empowering experiences for kids!
4. Audition Details
RPL auditions are designed to be fun and empowering experiences for kids of all ages. We see auditions as an opportunity to get to know each child, and connect with them 1:1 to celebrate their individual personality. We love seeing returning RPL performers come back with expanded confidence with each audition! We also love welcoming new kids and getting to know them in a safe and encouraging environment. When it's a child's first audition experience, we go out of our way to make it an ultra-positive one!
* For Adventures in Green Gables, we will hold auditions on Zoom with 20-minute timeslots.
* Reservations are taken on a first-come, first-served basis via this online reservation form.
* Siblings can share a timeslot, but keep in mind that the 20-minute limit per slot is firm.
* Parents can be in the room while children audition or not - it's up to the child's preference.
* Parents will be sent online paperwork to review prior to auditions, to be submitted at the time of audition. Parents are welcome to ask questions during the 20 minute slot, or can email Marney at any time.
* To prepare, we simply ask each child to sing. It can be absolutely any song! We have compiled some of the songs in a collection of Adventures in Green Gables Audition Songs for kids who would like to sing a song from the show. There are several options, including a 3-line excerpt that is perfect for beginning. Singing a song from the show, however, is by no means required, and kids are welcome to sing absolutely any song they like.
* Kids can sing with a backtrack, or sing a cappella (without accompaniment.) If you plan to use a backtrack, please have it ready to play on a device that is separate from the device you're using for Zoom. For example - if you are using a computer for Zoom, you will need to use a phone for the backtrack. It is important to have this et up and ready to go prior to your audition timeslot, so we can make the most of your child's time.
* If your child is singing one of the songs from the show, backtracks can be accessed in the collection of Adventures in Green Gables Audition Songs.
* Each child will be asked to read a short piece from the script (non-readers can "echo back" lines), but this is not necessary to prepare ahead of time. We do have quite a few non-singing roles, so kids who are more interested in acting than singing are very welcome!
* If needed, callbacks will be held January 20-21. Callbacks might be used if we would like additional time with children under consideration for some roles.
* A word to "RPL veterans": We encourage you to use this opportunity to show us something new...perhaps a side of your singing voice that we haven't heard on our stage, or a type of character that is new for you. You already know that our auditions are fun and easy, so take this chance to stretch yourself outside your comfort zone. You might stretch yourself to learn one of the songs from Green Gables and experiment with developing a character. A well-prepared song in auditions that demonstrates your effort definitely makes a difference....for us, and for you!

Roles to Be Cast
5. Roles to Be Cast
Every child participating is given a role. As this is an original musical, some characters in the following list may change based on casting and choices necessary for the show’s development. All roles are inspired by characters in the book, but have been developed with additional details to contribute to the story in our adaptation.
