Spring 2019 Musical: WHIRLD!

Picture
Auditions: Feb 6, 8, 13, 15
Rehearsals: Feb 20-May 30
Performances: May 31-June 2
WHIRLD!: A Musical Flight through the Impossible, is an original Read Play Love musical, loosely inspired by Around the World in 80 Days by Jules Verne.  RPL first wrote and produced WHIRLD! in 2017.

Whirld! takes place in 1893, in a steampunk setting blending the Victorian Era with advancing technology, with an adventurous story that explores the nature of "the impossible."

You can read more about the story and characters to cast, here.

The unique thing about Read Play Love is...the love!    We create a role for every child participating, and from an empowering audition to a triumphant closing night, our primary goal is simple: to build confidence and nurture creative expression of each child.  RPL is the ideal place for kids to try theatre for the first time, as well as more experienced performers to stretch their wings & grow!

2. What's Different about Read Play Love Musicals?

* Unlike many traditional theatre programs, our primary focus is simple: building confidence & nuturing the creative self-discovery of each one of our kids!

* Even our auditions are designed  to be 100% empowering, inspiring experiences where the kids feel GREAT!  Plus...we create a role for every single child participating!

* We mentor kids where they are and help them shine and feel great...all while being part of a high quality production!

* Busy schedule? No problem! We always do our best to work around the schedules of busy families.

* We produce family-friendly favorites as well as develop brand new musicals, as part of our series of "New Musicals for a New Generation!"

* RPL is the ideal place for kids to try theatre for the first time, as well as  more experienced performers to stretch their wings & grow!

3. What Does it Cost?

Production Fee is $199/child
Family Friendly Pricing for more than one child in show:
25% off both when 2  =      $ 298 total for 2 children
35% off all  when  3  =       $ 390 total for 3 children
50% off all  when  4+ =     $ 398 total for 4 children

Read Play Love Members: For current RPL Members in a six-month membership commitment to the RPL Community, there is a one-time production fee of $60 for 1 child, $90 for two children, with a family-friendly cap of $120 for 3 or more children. Click here for info about RPL Membership.

* Costume costs are the responsibility of parents, but  parents work together to decide and make everything as easy and most importantly, cost-effective as possible, often using shared, donated, or secondhand materials to keep costs minimum and much less expensive than other theatre production opportunies.

* A Concessions Donation of $10 per production is requested of all families.

* CD and Script (optional):  For a supply fee of $15, we will supply you with a CD of all the songs and backtracks, as well as a printed script.  We will also send you a ZIP file including the script and all songs as individual MP3 tracks, which you can download/print yourself.

* A one-time annual registration fee of $35 includes background checks, which we are now requiring for production families and volunteers in accordance with best practices for safety of the kids involved.  (Note: If you already paid your registration fee in the Fall, you do not need to pay again until Fall 2019)

* Fundraisers, such as t-shirts, photobooks, and production DVDs, are optional and up to the discretion of each family.

* Parents are expected to work on one of the parent crews (props, costumes, set, production, or management) based on their interests, skills and time available. This investment of time is crucial for an all-volunteer production, but we work with each family to find the best fit that works with your schedule.

 4. Audition Details

Auditions take place on Jan 30 , Feb 1, Feb 6, and Feb 8  at "The Point" Building at CC Young Senior Center.
lease reserve your audition timeslot by clicking the button below.

Video auditions are also accepted; please email Ms. Marney for details. If this is your first time being in a production at RPL, meeting in-person is preferred, if possible.

Our auditions are designed to be fun and empowering experiences for kids of all ages.  We see auditions as an opportunity to get to know each child, and connect with them 1:1 to celebrate their individual personality.  We love seeing returning RPL performers come back with expanded confidence with each audition! We also love welcoming new kids and getting to know them in a safe and encouraging environment. When it's a child's first audition experience, we go out of our way to make it an ultra-positive one!

To prepare, we simply ask every child auditioning to sing a song - it can be absolutely any song!  Feel free to bring backtracks or sing along with a recording, but singing a cappella (without backtrack) is also just fine.  The important thing is to enjoy and have fun.  We also may ask kids read a short bit from the script (non-readers can "echo back" lines), but this is not necessary to prepare ahead of time. We do have quite a few non-singing roles, so kids more interested in acting than singing are very welcome!

Optional:  Want to audition with a song from WHIRLD?  This is completely optional, but we offer it as an suggestion for children who are motivated to learn something new.   If your child is interested in one of the six "traveler" characters, it is especially helpful to learn one of the verses from "Impossible" - but this is by no means required. Click here for the materials for the songs (scroll down to the bottom of the page.)

Auditions take place in a small classroom with Marney and Tony (RPL founders and creators of the musical) - who love to cheer kids on!  Parents are welcome to be inside the room or not, depending on the child's preference.  If a child prefers the parent to not be in the room, we always invite new parents to come in and chat with us for a bit after the audition is over.

A word to "RPL veterans": We encourage you to use this opportunity to show us something new...perhaps a side of your singing voice that we haven't heard on our stage, or a type of character that is new for you.  You already know that our auditions are fun and easy, so take this chance to stretch yourself outside your comfort zone. You might stretch yourself to learn one of the verses from "Impossible"(scroll to the bottom of the page)  and experiment with developing a character.   A well-prepared song in auditions that demonstrates your effort definitely makes a difference....for us, and for you!
