Our theme for art camp in 2017 is Makerspace Art....exploring themes from Shakespeare! This week-long camp offers a creative partnership with our production of A Midsummer Night's rock, the original musical that will be rehearsing concurrently at Read Play Love. Kids age 8+ will create their "pop up makerspace" with all kinds of raw materials for making recycled and upcycled mixed media assemblage. The environment focuses on exposing kids to new media and ideas, and allowing free expression to come through! While artistic skills are introduced, our focus is always on the reflective process of art-making in a way that empowers each child. After creating a community makerspace together, the artists will work on projects - individually and collectively - that are inspired by timeless themes in Shakepeare's works, such as: autonomy and identity, greed and corruption, illusion and reality, order and chaos, love and loss, comedy and tragedy. Brief introductions to Shakespeare's works and themes gives a basic context to enrich the art-making experience. There will be a causal Art Gallery Showing on Friday Evening, June 9, at 5:30, to share the works with participating families. We will also display a number of creations in the lobby for our Midsummer Night's Rock performances, and are seeking other local venues for displaying the works in our community. |
